'm looking through a journal from when I was a teenager. There's no other way to say it, I was not a happy child. I came from families that are much more comfortable expressing anger or hatred than kindness.
Not to get too specific, but my sister told me that my mother had told her (when she was a young child) that she wished she had never been born.
Looking through my old journal... I wrote about a fight with my mother, and she told me she wished I had died. Referring to when I had a major medical crisis.
Unfortunately my mother hasn't gained any insight into her issues and problems and still acts similarly to how she did when my sister and I were growing up.
Im curious to know... I know saying those things to a child is not good for the child... but even so.. behaviors can still be common even though they are harmful. So that makes me curious...
How common is it for children to hear those kinds of sentiments expressed by their mothers?
For those of you who have mothers who treated or still treat them this way... how do you handle and interact with her?
Tl;dr My mom told my sister she wished she had never been born. Mom told me she wished I had died. How common is it for mothers to talk to children like this? Can you relate?
