RL Reward formulation best practices?

Hello,
Happy new year everyone!
I believe the formulation of rewards play a major part in successful learning of an RL agent. Are there general procedures, best practices or textbooks (or chapters of a textbook) available as a guideline to formulate rewards in a given environment.
For instance, decisions such as whether to select linear or quadratic rewards, how to combine multiple states (or actions ) together to effectively drive multi-objective optimization.
