Refrigerator making loud humming noise when shut

We’ve recently bought a second hand fridge-freezer which I’ve only just noticed makes a noticeable humming noise. The humming noise seems to go on for longer than it doesn’t hum (I haven’t timed it, but many many hours of humming). The humming seems to stop if the fridge door is opened and starts again when it’s closed.
Please help me keep my sanity.
