Who do you want to see added to the team? Who are you willing to trade away? Let's talk about it!
I've been spending the second half of my shift reading up on our good ole Red Sox and looking to chat about it. Also just coming across this rumor that the Yanks are way ahead of everyone else for Yamamoto and it just sounds like a bunch of bs. I can't say it enough of how badly we need to sign Yamamoto. I just hope all of the former Sox players from Japan and Masa are able to convince him to play for us, in America's most beloved ballpark no less.
Starting Pitching: I'll say it again, Yamamoto. We need him, he can be very successful in our organization, and I love the pitch repertoire. Now as far as other starters, trade options don't really excite me except for Dylan Cease, I'm not really impressed or like the other names that have been dropped. I like Snell and Montgomery, but I'm always biased towards lefties though haha. One of those guys with Yamamoto and hopefully a healthy Sale, with Bello? Man Bello could exponentially improve and learn, and I'm all for that since Pedro is so keen on him as well. I also like Giolito, and I really like Jack Flaherty a lot, as well as E-Rod. I miss E-Rod, he did well with us.
Bullpen: Put Whitlock back in the bullpen and have him learn from Kenley. We don't need to sign another closer, and we have control of Whitlock for a while. Chris Martin was great as well. If we signed one or two middle inning bullpen guys we'll be fine. It was starting pitching the really fucked us last season, not the bullpen. Bullpen will continue to get better. If they make a move for an everyday closer, they'll have to find a way to move Kenley IMO.
DH: I would really love to see Justin Turner come back. I think he really gels with the team, the organization, the fans, the city, just everything about the Red Sox, he is that guy to me. I loved seeing the talks with Cora in game. He's the right kind of (winning) veteran we need to get back to the post season and a WS win. Not only that, but the man had a career season for RBI with us. Though I wouldn't mind seeing Masa in the DH spot for most of the year either. I know the Monster is no easy beast to manage out there but the defense isn't really there in my opinion. I think we might be better off looking for a glove out there. Maybe find a balance in the DH spot with the two if they sign JT again?
OF: Going off the JT/Masa DH situation, if it's always Masa then who would you want in the OF? I like Durran in center for us, he improved a lot from the previous season, and the speed is a serious factor to consider. Also helpful to get back in the triangle quickly (he did have some great plays this last season). I'm not opposed to keeping Verdugo, and I'm not against a trade either. Sure his bat is streaky but he's got good enough defense and arm, which we really need. Maybe we sign Kiermaier and throw him around the OF, then trade Verdugo and a prospect for a better/great RF? To me it all depends on what they want to do with Masa. But I would really like to see Durran in CF and some prospects/young guys getting play time out in LF/RF.
INF: 2B is the only question mark on the infield. I would like to see Pablo Reyes there along with some of the prospects or young guys, there was some good defense from him and the young guys seem to be improving quickly. I'd almost prefer to see a real utility player signed to cover 2B, SS on Story's days off, and OF to give some of those guys a day. I really hope Story stays healthy and has a great year, he deserves it, and I think some people have been a little too harsh on him. JT needs to come back, to me he seems like the glue of the team; a natural leader, and a winning veteran. He and Casas would share 1B for sure, with JT hitting DH most of the time (or sharing that time with Masa). I like our ctachers, I don't know about you guys, but to me they're solid. I mean, they have Varitek to lean on for advice or anything, and we all know how great he was, not just as a catcher, but controlling the game (maybe why he's game planning coordinator). I don't want to see that catcher we just drafted leave our system though, I've got a good feeling on him for some reason, and want him to learn from Tek.
Anyway, if you stuck through all this I appreciate you and we def need to chat baseball! But seriously, I love everything Breslow is about. He get its, and he seems like he's going to be a great chief of baseball operations.
Iāve been trying to look and think of moves with reality in mind and long term vs short term and all that. Breslow has made many comments about upgrading pitching. To me it sounds like heās going for an ace.
All that being said what you have in mind is certainly disappointing and not what Breslow has been putting up, at least in my opinion. If Giolito and Stroman are your ābig guysā, then yikes. You think Giolito would do that poorly in Fenway?
I think the goal is to get our pitchers where they should be. Whitlock in the pen, maybe even Pivetta. Keep Sale in the rotation because the manās a fierce competitor, still got the stuff too, just not the heat (fine by me honestly but thatās my pitching philosophy).
Something must have a happened during the season because the first half they seemed fine. Ultimately itās up to Breslow though. Defense is def a priority for the outfield spots and 2B though. At least in my mind.
I think itās a tough ask to get a star player aaannd star pitching, and mid tier pitching all in one off season. I know ownership says theyāll spend the money but I donāt think theyāll go all out like the Dodgers and Yanks. They never have. And when has spending the money gotten a team a WS win? Mets had a terrible season, so did the Padres, and they both spent money to win. It might look good to add Soto on paper as an individual, but idk if heās a Red Sox. Heās not really known for his defense either, at least Verdugo has a decent glove and arm.
I donāt know man I guess Iād just rather see more pitching. Last season the bullpen finally showed up, but got burnt out because we had no starters. Why spend the money on a position that isnāt a need? Especially if we have to give up that much for him. I donāt think itās worth it to bring Soto on. We have Raffy to build and develop the team around. And we desperately need starting pitchers.
I hate to say it but yea heās looking like 300. So many want him, hopefully our guys do a good job convincing him to come down a bit and play for us.
You say donāt spend money on OF but want to blowup our payroll with Soto? I donāt see the draw for Soto for us honestly. I think we could spend money elsewhere and do better. We really need pitching and defense more than the offense. The offense is there. We have Devers, Masa, Story, and Casas for drive offense. Maybe a right handed bat like JT or a good utility right hand bat. I really donāt see the draw for Soto for us though. And if itās gonna cost that much for him? I donāt think itās worth it š¤·š»āāļø

Yeaaaa I hear you and under Bloom I would def agree with you, but when Breslow came on and the way heās been talking about moves and everything, I think ownership is willing to spend a bit this year. Blooms moves were trash. I guess he rebuilt the farm but, yikes what a bad run in the majors. So glad heās gone
