I've been doing a lot more reading up on the Sox (and baseball in general) this year than ever before and still no baseball fans in my circle, here we are haha. With the new chief of baseball operations that is Craig Breslow, who else is excited and looking forward to this offseason and the upcoming season? It's great to see a former Red Sox in the spot, and a native New Englander to boot, he def gets what needs to be done. But does he have the green light?
I know everyone wants Ohtani. Let's be real, who doesn't? He's literally in a different tier of players, but honestly I would love to see Yamamoto join the club. We really need starting pitching, and as much as I love Sale, he's not our ace. Yamamoto has been absolutely dominating, and I think he would be a cheaper option than some of the other starters in the free agent market (Ohtani, Flaherty, Snell), and he's already got a compatriot on the team. Now if we want to trade someone in the outfield to get some more expensive pitching, I'm all for it. Whitlock also needs to go back in the bullpen, he is not a starter by any means.
Anyway, I'd love to get into it and have some good chats/discussions about what moves you'd like to see made or anything baseball. I need baseball friends!
Joey Votto should retire as a Red and the Reds organization are idiots for not keeping and letting him retire as a Red. Modern icon for their franchise and they want to throw him to the curb. The disrespect.
We also don’t have a need for Votto with Casas having a ROY contender season. I would love to see JT back though, that man embodies the true Red Sox ballplayer attitude and everything. Duvall I could live without, I want to see Durran do well and also Cedanne as backup if we don’t get a gold glove caliber CF.
But yea starting pitching is an obvious need, has been for a while tbh. I def would love to see JT back though, gotta happen.
I just really enjoyed E-Rod and felt like he fit for us, I'll take a lefty that deals agains the Yankees any day of the week.
Yankees management seems to be fucking up or something from what I hear haha. I'd love to see them in the bottom of the standings again. But what they need is to realize baseball isn't all about hitting homeruns. If they don't change that fundamental ideology then who cares what they do, let them fail.
We have depth for pitching, yea they're younger and still developing a bit, but thats what real depth is, not just having a surplus of 3-5 guys. We need an ace no doubt, another starter would be smart too, but I think the bullpen is fine. Put Whitlock back in the bullpen and have him learn under Kenley, I don't think we need to sign another closer. Martin was also a beast out of the bullpen, I would love to see him more.
Yea second base is a big question right now, and the main issue with the middle infield. Story is healthy again, he just needs to stay focused on his defense and whenever his bat shows up, hey I'll be happy. But second base is a must, I like Pablo Reyes and some of the other guys we have for platoon type, but I don't even know who to go after or trade for, maybe Whit? I think 2B will be the platoon/rotating spot for now. As far as defense, maybe better coaching? Yea a star CF would be nice but Belli aint the gold glover you want. Verdugo might leave, I like him but I'm not stuck to him like I was other players, if they do get rid of him they better get someone or something good out of it. Trading away Mookie and Price for Verdugo was not a W for us, and I'd hate to see another trade like that happen. I like Durran but want him to do better.
It's nice seeing some people also want and understand the need for Yamamoto, I think for us, it's the move. We won't be able to make many other moves if we sign Ohtani other than trading players we have. I think Verdugo's time is up, I like him, but was never crazy about him. Plus to me, we lost that trade. Verdugo turned out good but not worth Mookie and Price; if he goes, we need a good 2B or OF, as good or better than Verdugo. Masa absolutely should be DH, and Durran in CF but I just hope he feels better and can feel good about his role. His speed is nearly unrivaled, I want to see him succeed with us (just change the hair man yikes).
My problem is I don't even know who I would want at 2B or to replace Verdugo. I like Pablo Reyes being a platoon/part time 2B, he's got a good glove and decent bat with us it seems. Cedanne would probably make the roster if we don't sign a gold glove caliber OF. Maybe sign Belli, trade Verdugo, and nab an OF. Abreu or Valdez being platoon would also be interesting I think. All I know is we desperately need starting pitching. Whitlock needs to go back to the bullpen.
I totally agree, Yamamoto is a must and I think we should be a little more realistic in this offseason. The other half of signing Ohtani is the collateral, we signed Devers to build around so Ohtani might be a short contract if anything? Or we would have to seriously develop young players quick and trade off some high value contracts (Story, Verdugo). Though I like the defense Verdugo brings, we need that in the OF right now, seeing a trade for him would be interesting, but would we trade for 2B and let some of our young OF step up, or full replace and use the younger guys to trade up for 2B. My biggest gripe about trading Verdugo is that I want to see real value come back to us. The fact that we got Verdugo (thankfully he turned out decent) for both Mookie and Price, ridiculous and a big L for us. So for me that means if Verdugo goes, I want to see a really good starter or second baseman.
Pitching - If we can't get Yamamato, I like Nola or some of those other names you mentioned but not so much Snell. I really Like Flaherty and Giolito, oh and E-Rod of course.
INF/OF - I like Pablo Reyes as a utility guy or part time second base for us, he's got a good glove and arm, makes the plays. Cedanne I can see being on the roster if we don't find a good glove in the OF or at 2B. Trade away Urias and keep Valdez. I like Durran and want to seem him succeed, the speed he brings is nearly unrivaled. Whit makes sense on paper but I think Justin Turner is going to come back, I hope so at least. Gives us another option at first when Casas needs a break, plus he had a record high RBI this last season. He loves Boston, his wife loves Boston, he's still training there, it's just a good fit as a vet. Loved seeing him and Cora talking so much too.
Oh you wanna talk back ups? I love E-Rod, I would love to see him come back. I was sad to see him go, he dealt agains the Yanks and loved the Red Sox.
On a more serious note, I think either of those guys would be worth making a call. Personally I like Flaherty, Giolito, or even Montgomery a little more. But I think since the Mets picked up Senga last season and we got Masa, it’s only makes sense to me to push for Yamamoto more.
Yea I mean I’d love to see it but since Henry just shelled out for Raffy last offseason, I’m not sure we’ll have Ohtani to build a team around, maybe a few years? That was kind of the move with Raffy I believe, to build a team around him.
I’m really just not getting my hopes up with all the rumors and his NB partnership. Yes it looks good, yes he loves Boston and Fenway (again, who doesn’t?), yes we would all love it and it makes sense. But I’d almost rather see the money be spent elsewhere for a short term contract vs trying to juggle high value long term contracts.
Yea it took me a hot minute to step back and be like okay, Verdugo is going to grow into something good, just wait. But yea he just doesn't seem to be as invested, and unfortunately that kind of attitude is not gonna fly with us. I was really hoping he would get a fire under his ass after the AS break and hearing that.
But yea ultimately we need starting pitchers, offense can always show up, especially with Raffy, Story, and Masa on the team. I'd love to see JT come back and add his bat and his attitude. Bloom really fucked up on keeping some guys around to build postseason longevity in a team. But he did get us some top prospects to prepare for another annual postseason team.
If you're talking about the Bucs they went all in, they had nothing to start with. If you think Ohtani is the key then why haven't the Angles made the playoffs? That is a mediocre team, not Boston. Boston underperformed last season, everyone knew it, and had injuries on top of it all. All I'm saying is be prepared to not get him. Everyone is going for him, they would be stupid not to, so he has his choice of wherever he wants to go like no one else has before. Just out here being a bit realistic, I'd rather be surprised and happy than heartbroken (Mookie). Has he even met with Boston owners or anything like that? The only thing that I have heard about Ohtani going to Boston is the fact that he really likes Fenway and has the NB partnership.
So if we don't sign him, who would you like to see?
And what happens if we sign him? Who else do you add to the team because there are still strong needs than just a unicorn ace.

My only gripe with Snell is that I don’t think he’s worth it like some of the other guys. Maybe I just don’t like him vs other pitchers, but I’m always biased to a lefty so there’s that. I just really love Sale but wish he would calm down a bit and just put in his work vs going the extra mile now. Time for him to be a Veteran, to teach and lead.
