I think it’s called “an unreliable narrator”, Pierce does it a lot. I actually really enjoy it. I think of it more that the character is feigning his emotions so hard he uses his thoughts to do so.

But I agree that it’s a bit weird and maybe not for everyone. If this bothers you though, it happens a bit through the first three books.

Personally I love it, and enjoy the storytelling. I think of it more as a medium to telling the story than anything else.
