I absolutely despise the wasted empty white space on the left. The topic list feels incredibly cramped, and even more so when you open the topic. Why cram it all several inches from the left side of the screen? It's even more ridiculous that opening the subscribed subs menu scootches it over even more, despite there being more than enough room to comfortably fit the menu next to the content. I know that my experience may be different than others' based on their monitor size and resolution. Still, I come to Reddit to see the content, not empty space.
Reddit's design has always been a welcome respite from the hyper trendy websites that try to manipulate where your eyes fall on the page. Reddit's designed feels (felt?) like looking through Google search results: clean, no frills, no wasted space. Just stuff to click on, arranged on a page. The redesign smashes the titles so that they don't fit cleanly on the page without a line break, or else they have to be so small that it's obnoxious to read.
- It's jarring and unintuitive to follow with your eyes
- It wastes space on the page with obnoxious glaring white space
- It blends in with every other garbage website like Buzzfeed and Facebook. Seriously, Reddit, do you want to look like Buzzfeed!? Because this is how you look like Buzzfeed. Is the plan to skip the middleman stealing AskReddit answers to write clickbait articles and just imitate those sites?
Yeah, but the new "submit a new post" page is nice. I am a fan of that. So I guess 1/10? Otherwise, I find it hideous and pointless. I'm not saying Reddit should never innovate, but when I'm browsing a desktop version of a website I don't think it should look like the mobile version.
