I abhor the 50.1% Majority voting scheme. I submit the following as alternatives: Anyone care to jump in?
Negative Voting: Each voter is allowed to choose one candidate to either vote for (giving the candidate one point) or to vote against (giving the candidate –1 points). The winner(s) is(are) the candidate(s) with the highest score(s) (i.e., the most positive votes).

Cumulative Voting: Each voter is asked to distribute a fixed number of points, say ten, among the candidates in any way they please. The candidate(s) with the most points wins the election.
We have to figure out how to arrive at reasonable consensus or compromise. I would even consider something like an issue needs an 85% consensus to be brought to vote, then we use an alternat method to do the final voting. I think this is important; I think it could make or break the island...
EDIT: I'm reading "candidate" as "issue" or "item" or "rule" as well...
