Is it possible to get the number of unread messages via the API?

Is this possible? Fetch the total number of unread messages/replies via the API? The reddit website obviously lists it next to the orangered envelope, but I can't find it anywhere in the API.
It'd be really great if message/unread returned it as an additional value so it wouldn't require two API calls.
