Perfect Pelts..

I’ve been trying to get perfect pelts, for items from the trapper, and I’m having a damn hard time of it. Anytime I come across a 3 star animal the pelt always gets knocked down to 2 stars after the kill.. even using the bow..
Any tips, tactics to help me out? Thanks.
