I killed the Valentine sheriff. Did I screw myself out of bounties?

I got a wanted level in Valentine and the law was chasing after me. I tried not to shoot anyone, but my horse wasn't fast enough to outrun them and I was about to die so I had to kill a few of them. One of the guys I killed happened to be the sheriff. And since then, I have not been able to hunt for any bounties in Valentine. It has been several in-game days since then and I ended up serving my time to get rid of the bounty, but the icon is still missing. Will this eventually come back, or did I screw myself out of part of the game?
