Treasure Maps - right way to do them?

Hi guys,
Just picked up my first treasure map - the poisonous trail or something.
However, really don't want to go looking up walkthroughs to get it. What's the right way to do them? The game doesn't help us with waypoints do they?
Is it just a question of keeping my eyes open for the landmark while exploring?
