How does saving in this game work?

So, I'm on my third playthrough with a break of at least 3 years.

Anyway, I wanted to try the Albert Mason glitch for the MFT, but it seems saving doesn't really work as I would expect it to.

Anyway, I saved the game before approaching Mason. At the time I was near Seamuses barn. I failed on my first attempt and went to reload the game. Loe and behold, Mason is no longer there. I tried reloading, restarting the game, etc. Nothing helped.

What did I do wrong?

EDIT: Anyway, Mason is back after I moved away from the area. I managed to get the MFT! Pic below :)

I got it! Tracking still freaking works. I think the key was that I managed to stay in the "tracking slow mo" animation even while approaching Mason on foot. The tracks lingered and took me directly to the MFT and I managed to jump on it, tame it and stable it.

I'll update the main post with a screenshot!

Not sure if that still works? The tracks are completely gone after I talk to Mason :/
