I hate when recruiters start off with ‘Tell me your current compensation’
Post Body

Its super unprofessional to me at least.

How do you respond when getting asked this question?

I responded “I apologize, I’m not here to talk about my current compensation, I’m here to talk about the position you’re pitching me”.

^THIS. ALWAYS LIE. If they are willing to ask such a bullshit question, make sure you do your part and lie through your teeth. Even better if they ask you to write it down.

I am a recruiter and I think it is really disrespectful to ask someone how much they are making to base their pay off of that. I do sometimes ask what is the starting rate at the company they are coming from if they are one of our competitors. I am just genuinely curious how low of offers some of our larger competition offers. We are pushing for a $25.00 hourly rate regardless of experience or education, but our funding sources are putting up a fight to make sure we can't pay well and it sucks.
