Honestly, I don't get it. "the recruiter refuses to share the salary range". So what?
I work in data science for a large company and get recruiters reaching out to me every week. They usually don't share the salary range upfront.
My standard reply? (assuming the role sounds interesting)
"HI XXXX,
Thanks for reaching out, I'm flattered by the interest, and would love to hear more about the role.
However, to avoid wasting both of our time, please note that I'll only consider roles at <enter your DESIRED SALARY here, along with any other non-negotiable demands - visa requirements, industry, etc>, although I may be willing to compromise a bit for a truly outstanding opportunity.
If none of the above are deal-breakees, I'd love to chat. I can be reached at <phone number>.
Thanks, <name>"
This has several benefits - 1) It makes the recruiter's life easier. 2) It sets a MINIMUM bar (so make sure if you do get this offer, you'll be happy). 3) the recruiter may very well have other roles to offer you tgey didn't think to propose, which fit this salary range even if the original role does not
Edit: typos and grammer
Edit 2: Jfc, apparently a lot of people find the idea of figuring out what they want to get paid and actually asking for it very triggering. How weird.
I bet y'all are expecting the plumber to come look at your pipes and instead of giving a quote for the job just ask you "so... How much were you think g of paying for this job?"
