Does interview feedback even exist in the US?
Post Body

I’m American but lived and worked in the UK. All the jobs I interviewed for in the UK gave me interview feedback when I asked, including the company that hired me when I applied for a promotion.

Now I’ve had ample experience interviewing in the US after coming back and have only been offered 2/10ish jobs for which I’ve interviewed. EVERY company either claims to not have a feedback process or claims they are unable to because of company policy. My partner says, “better no feedback than bad feedback,” but I’m not inclined to agree with that. I’ve felt pretty confident after every interview I’ve done and the only thing I’ve been able to apply to future interviews is the one or two times they called me a “top candidate.” How am I meant to know where my interviewing strengths and weaknesses are? How am I meant to demonstrate that I “want to work for ____” without the opportunity to improve on potential future interviews within that company?

I’m getting disheartened and have applied for a dream job for which I expect to get an interview. I have no idea where to begin regarding interview prep because no one has told me what they like and dislike about my interviewing style. I’m going to keep going to these interviews with the same strategy and not know how to improve, even though they would be so lucky to have me because of my work ethic and integrity.

It’s also exhausting to give these people several hours of my time tailoring my resume, writing a cover letter, interviewing and preparing to interview for these roles, while recruiters are at least being paid for the slog of interviewing. They’re still making money when they provide feedback to failed candidates, but I’ve given up time and money to prepare and show up for these interviews and am not getting a single benefit, even in the form of “this is what you did well, this is why it didn’t work for us.”

I’m getting extremely nervous about interviewing for my dream job because I’ve not been given an opportunity to learn how to improve for the next role. I’m not sure where to go from here.
