My husband and I adopted the dog together, so he isn't some new person the dog is getting used to. We have had the dog for about 4 months and within the last month or so he has started reacting strongly to us hugging. He growls and barks, his tail is wagging and the hairs on his neck are not raised. He only does this if we are hugging while standing up or on a chair, not if we're cuddled up on the couch. I don't think the dog wants a hug. He walks away from me when I try to smother him with hugs and kisses. Any insight on how I could discourage this behavior?
