Aggression or prey drive?
So my dog is great with people and dogs, however one of her big issues is her absolutely hatred (I think) of cats.
When she was young, there was one cat that she would see regularly on her walk and she would get very nervous and almost side step it or get us to go an alternative path around it. She’s nearly 2 now and if she sees a cat on the street she will lose her mind, she will bark like crazy, seem highly aroused and try to lunge towards it, it’s like she turns possessed! She is never off lead though and never will be. At the moment when we are on walks we are now going routes with little to no dogs and if we do see one we are distracting with high value treats so she doesn’t see them.
My question is, does this sound like prey drive or aggression towards cats? We are never, ever going to own a cat so that’s not an issue but I would just like to know. On the one hand she is trying to get towards it (like prey drive) but on the other it just looks like she fucking hates it and gets very worked up. How common is this sort of behaviour is my second question?
Thanks for your help!
