We got a new computer more than a year ago and I never bothered to try to play RCT1, assuming it wouldn't work, but this week I put the disc in, just out of curiosity, and was so pleased when it installed and played perfectly with no adjustments necessary ... until I quit and got an ''Access Violation'' message.
Then when I went to play it again, it wouldn't open a saved games window, so I couldn't load my saved park ... so I've spent a few days searching the internet for advice and found this is a common problem, and I've tried changing the compatibility settings, but strangely it won't even work at all when using compatibility with Windows 95 or 98, even though that's what the game was designed for.
I've tried 'running the game as administrator' and I've tried 'disabling visual themes' and I've tried 'giving full permissions to everyone'
I've tried running the game in a window instead of full screen ... it didn't help and also, as a by the way, I can't seem to move around the park when it's in a window, it doesn't scroll when the cursor touches the edge, and can't 'grab' the scene and move it either.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling it ... after the first time of reinstalling, it briefly worked and I could access my saved game, but after quitting, the same problem recurred ... I tried reinstalling it again, but this time it didn't work.
I've tried downloading the patch rct-uk.exe. but my Norton Internet Security immediately removed it and warned me that it is a threat to our computer.
Update: With a bit of encouragement, I downloaded the patch again and had to spend some time learning how to get Norton to allow me to use it ... and it worked! I can save games now! Thank you to everyone who helped :)
