6 month old kitten growls and hisses when eating raw meat

Post Body

I have a 16 year old purebred persian, and a 6 month old domestic shorthair (both males)

I adopted the kitten from a guy whose cat got pregnant, and the litter was always kept inside the house, so he wasn't a stray.

Overall, they have a pretty good relationship (the kitten plays a bit rough with the grumpy old man).

They eat side by side usually, and before I started transitioning to raw I used to give them high quality wet food. I was recommended to mix both types of food together to slowly get them accustomed to the raw food.

However, I've noticed that when the kitten starts eating the raw parts of the mix, he growls, and runs away from the other cat, taking the food with him in his mouth.

Yesterday, when I prepared their food, the kitten was waiting next to the usual spot, and when I motioned for the older cat to go there, the kitten took a 'defense' position and hissed at him. It never happened before, they do play fight but they are never aggressive.

The little guy is obsessed with food and he also growls when eating any type of raw meat (e.g., when he steals a piece of raw meat/chicken while I'm cooking). His hunting instinct immediately takes over.

Does anyone else have cats with the same behaviour?

Resource guarding! They guard high value items so raw is dedicated high value. Best thing to do is give them a safe space during meal times so they know no ones taking their food
