Post Body

I am a Baltimore boy born and bred, but currently I am up here living in Massachusetts. Although I usually listen to a lot of local sports radio, I couldn't bring myself to listen this morning. On my way home from work, I decided to open my ears and flipped on one of the better local shows; I made it just in time to hear them talk about the game. (Felger and Massarotti--CBS affiliate) Their choice of topic was mainly the Ravens.

Their opinions:

  • The Ravens were the better team on Sunday. They played a great game. They had plenty of chances to win, but just couldn't make any of them count. Their primary criticism was the Ravens offense. (in fact, no one was questioning the defense)
  • Cam Cameron: They thought he should have a lot of the blame for the lack of offensive for the Ravens. They thought he moved away from Ray Rice too much. They said overall his playcalling was suspect. And they said the fourth quarter was a disaster for the Ravens offense; they had the ball 3 times in the Patriots half of the field and came away with zero points. They specifically called out the drive where the Ravens went for it on fourth down. They were flabbergasted that on 3rd and short Cameron called a hand-off straight up the middle. Rushing up the middle had been the least productive thing all game, and it also meant running straight at the Patriots best (by far) defensive player in Vince Wilfork. They also thought the ensuing sequence was crazy; not having a fourth down play ready/the coaches scuffle/ the resulting throw out of bounds.

  • Despite the numbers, Joe Flacco did not have a great game: (I mentioned this in a post yesterday) Joe's numbers were 304 yds, 2 TDs, and 1 INT. In the regular season the Pat's allowed an average of 296 passing yds/game, 1.6 TDs, and 1.4 INTs. Flacco was no better than the rest of the league against the Pats, and the Patriots had a fairly easy schedule this year (Guys like Dan Orlofsky had big days throwing on them). They picked out four plays that they were especially hard on. Two deep balls to Torrey Smith that Flacco under threw--both, they thought, should have gone for TDs. There where also two missed check downs near the goal line; one to Ray Rice and one to Leech. Both of which Flacco didn't even see, and both could have gone for TDs. (That's four missed opportunities for TDs) They said that the thing that scares them the most, the thing that has the best chance at beating the Patriots, is a great QB. They still don't think Flacco is one of those guys. (Yet, hopefully)

  • Match ups: Throughout most of the game, Boldin was matched up with Julian Edelman. Edelman is a third year WR/returner who has been converted to CB for part of the season because of the lack of depth in the Patriots secondary. To put it kindly, he's bad. Felger and Mazz were shocked that the Ravens didn't really target this match-up until the fourth quarter. They thought a good QB/Coordinator would have been looking at this the whole game.

  • The final Baltimore drive: They thought this drive was typical of a lot of the problems Baltimore had. They thought Evans should have caught the TD, or rather, they said a great WR makes that catch. They also thought a good kicker makes the final FG. To be fair, they also had a lot of criticism for the coaches during the field goal. They didn't understand why they didn't have Cundiff (and the FG team ready to run out) ready, why they didn't already know which hash mark he wanted to kick from, and why they did not--neither Harbaugh or Cundiff--take a time out to set up calmly.

I hope I didn't miss anything (I started to get frustrated and curse after a while)

After listening to Suggs, Lewis, Johnson, and Rice all talk since Sunday--I have nothing but hope for next year. With a new offensive coordinator, and the usually great collection of picks from Ozzie, I think the sky is the limit for both the offense and the team.

Great year, go Ravens.
