I've been pulling my home built camper and bikes with my Rav4 prime. My camper weighs about 2300lbs fully loaded and has a tongue weight of about 250lbs. I also have a hitch mounted bike rack, with bikes it weighs about 150lb. That puts my tongue weight at ~400lb and towing weight at 2300lbs.
I was using a class III hitch with a 7500lb tow/600lb tongue weight capacity, but it was too low to the ground and my bike tires would sometimes touch the road in bumpy situations.
I decided to get the OEM hitch from the dealer (PK960-42K10) so that my departure angle and bike height would be a few inches higher. However, I'm now noticing that my tongue weight (400lb) is over the 350lb that the new hitch receiver is rated at.
How big of a problem is this? Would the hardware of the OEM hitch receiver fail? Towing across the country with the class III hitch receiver and the 400lb tongue weight has been just fine other than the height of the bikes.
Will also mention that I have air suspension support bags installed in my rear suspension springs, and I have a brake controller in the car and brakes in the camper.
Thanks much!
