Not only is this wasteful, but you run into the problem I had, where the re-purchased item is no longer being sold.

The item I bought was a universal garage remote. It was out of stock for months, but I waited because it was the most popular one on both the US and Canadian sites, and I'm not in a rush. Finally, it comes in stock, I buy it, only to see it drop 30% off, three days after shipping. Amazon tells me to send the item back and rebuy it. A month later, my re-purchase still hasn't shipped, and Amazon tells me they won't be getting it in, so they cancel the order.

Unlike in the past, the only consolation they can offer is an extra 1 month to my Prime student membership.

Now I don't have the price OR the item.
