Loud breathing and snoring… ugh!
Post Body

Its my Sophomore year of college and I get a roommate since it’s a double with two beds. Pretty cool dude and introductions went smooth. We do stuff as roommates do by sharing food, helping each other out with homework if we have the same type of classes, and hanging out here and there.

He told me he had allergies (like really bad allergies), and I didn’t think too much about it. I asked how it is since I don’t have them and he told me he gets runny noses and dry eyes. The initial couple of times he would blow his nose into tissue paper wasn’t all that bad. Even when it came to sleep he would occasionally snore here and there, but it extremely loud. He couldn’t help it so I didn’t mind.

About three or four months in and I realize that he’s a mouth breather. One day when I didn’t have my headphones on when doing my homework, this guys breathing is unnecessarily loud. It’s akin to someone breathing down your neck in a dramatic way, or if you just ran on the treadmill. It’s hard to describe, but it just ticked me off.

For the snoring part it slowly got louder too. Let’s just say I had to wear AirPods Pro’s with the noise cancellation feature when I went to sleep. Sometimes this wasn’t enough and I would still hear his snoring. To combat this I went to YouTube and clicked on “white noise for sleeping,” and the rain one did wonders.

Putting up with another 5 months of mouth breathing, nose blowing, and snoring was psychological torture. I’m sure the repeated sounds made me develop frustration and annoyance (fun fact I searched this up and it was misophonia). I never brought up my issue with him regarding all the stuff I talked about in this post. You can’t really change someone’s lifestyle because their immune system is susceptible to allergies. I really wanted this to get this off my chest. Listening to a certain sound over and over could really get someone frustrated you know. I’m just glad I won’t have to put up with that again since I moved out since it was the end of the school year.
