Are cliques the norm in the US?
Post Body

I really hate them. I work at a Starbucks with tight spacing and so it's hard to NOT feel alone or out of place when everyone gets along or starts conversations with each other naturally and regularly. I know as a newbie you're gonna feel that but I've tried breaking the ice a few times and I'm often met with little reciprocation.

One employee is so weird to me. I can ask questions and they'll answer but they'll stonewall me frequently or there'll be uncomfortably awkward silent moments that make my skin crawl. I don't want to or need to be friends with everybody but this is unbearable.

I think I'm the oldest at 27 whereas a lot of them are in college (19, 20, 21). I feel like the outcast. I just started and I already want to leave. It's definitely waning on my excitement to learn and to grow here. What should I do? I'm considering applying to different jobs and just letting this one go when that happens.

My heart hurts because it SUCKS to feel this different from everybody else even though I've tried to be friendly, upbeat, and positive.
