My mom is no-contact with her mom (my grandma aka Gram). Recently, the anniversary of a family death came up, and my mom wanted to reach out because it had been a whole and Mom was doing well with therapy. The topic isn't one my mom likes discussing with Gram because of Gram's tendency to make it about her. Gram mentioned she was extra sad about it, so my mom suggested she find a therapist or talk to her husband about it (Mom's stepdad).
Gram then goes on to say how she had found this amazing therapist but cannot see her because it's my mom's therapist. She tells this whole long convoluted story about having an intake meeting and the therapist realizing my mom is one of her clients. Gram then insists that the therapist "never revealed any confidential information or any private things (my mom) had told her". My mom freaks out a little because my sister also sees this therapist and has gone completely no-contact with Gram and if Gram had gone in to see this therapist then she would have almost definitely run into her as the only day the therapist is where my sister can see her is the same day Gram would have gone.
Mom sends a message to her therapist thanking her for setting the boundary of "I cant see you because (my mom) is my client already". The therapist is surprised because she has never met my grandma. Gram made the whole thing up, insisting the whole time that the therapist never did anything to break client privileges, kept everything totally confidential, and all that.
She literally made up this whole conversation with a woman she hasn't met to try to get my mom to be paranoid about "how did (gram) find my therapist? What did (therapist) say to her? Did this therapist break my trust?".
So yeah. Needless to say, I've been no-contact with my grandma since Thanksgiving and that's not changing anytime soon. And my mom has decided to go back to no-contact.
