Why would my Adopted Mom beat me for finding out I was adopted?

Growing up I always thought something was off when looking at my adopted parents. I got the courage to go looking for the adoption papers when I was 10. I found them hidden in her closet. 4 years after that I would tell friends that I was adopted but on multiple occasions I would get beat for telling them and she would just say I am not adopted to my friends. I am just wanting to see what you guys think of this. Why would she never tell me and beat me for finding out and telling people?
