Railroad retirement disability application question
Post Body

I have over 20 years or railroad service and am interested in applying for a disability due to hearing loss. I’ve had this hearing loss for many years but it has now deteriorated to the point it’s affecting communication and thus safety as at my railroad, 100% of communication is done verbally by radio.

Can I apply for disability and continue working while awaiting their decision on approval? Or do I have to pull myself from service on medical leave and then await their decision?

Most of what I have seen is people getting disability by way of an injury or significant physical ailment such as heart attack or stroke, so it’s a bit different from my situation.

Thanks for your assistance and advice!
