Updating RC sailboat, need new servos?
Post Body

I inherited an old RC sailboat from my grandfather, and I'd like to update it with new servos and a new receiver. I don't know that the old ones don't work, but honestly I doubt they do. In any case, the receiver/transmitter was an old MHz pair that I also doubt still work. Since I got into RC planes I have a nice Spektrum dx6e, and I'd rather just use that.

The short version is that I still have no idea how to figure out what size servos I need for any given project. Up until this point my experience has been with RC planes, and all of them were either given to me fully built or Flite Test kits with recommended servos. I have a vague inkling of how the different sizes work, but there are just so many variables!

For what it's worth, the servos in the boat are two airtronics 94635 servos, which appear to be incompatible with the spektrum receivers I have. My questions, if anyone can help answer them, are:

  • Is there a receiver that would allow me to use the servos already in the boat, assuming they work?

  • Is there an adapter that would allow me to use both the servos and the spektrum receiver?

  • If neither (and if the servos are just old and busted) what modern servos are comparable to the ones in the boat?

This sub is always super helpful, thanks guys!
