Hello Seattle, I wanted to give a heads up on some (marginally) more sophisticated scammers that I've been seeing for the past few days.
Specifically, I have removed six posts all this morning with the following text:
26 [F4M] Are you bored? Me too! Lets have some fun?
I have no plan. Friends got busy. Feeling turned on a bit. I wanna have some fun! Anyone?
I am from united states and 26 year old anyway. If that matters lol. Well.. I am bored these days!
About me: I'm in business school and I work as a shop manager on the side. I like shopping, going out for dinner and drinks, reading, art, gaming a little, working out and game night with friends.
I don't care if our hobby's match, Lets go ahead and have some fun! We can start online with sharing our private photos and may be some cam calls? Lets see where it goes?
An automod rule has since been set up to auto-remove this specific template so that's not my concern.
The thing to be aware of is that many of these accounts are not empty and brand new anymore. They are months old, have verified emails, 1,000 karma, and a post history in subreddits like r/memes and r/askreddit. Basically, they re-post content to farm a few organic upvotes, create a somewhat convincing profile, and only then start their scamming in r4r subs. I suspect that some of these profiles may be bought too as I've seen a few which are multiple years old.
So, how can you spot these? The typical rules of thumb still apply:
- If it's too good to be true, it is.
- Does their profile have anything of substance? A bunch of meaningless meme posts is easy to fake.
- Does the r4r post include information about a type of person they are looking for or is it left undefined to attract as many guys as possible?
- Does it have odd phrasing? For instance, the example above includes "I am from united states." This isn't something someone supposedly already in Seattle would be writing.
- if you do message them, be wary of anyone that responds immediately and is also immediately open to a "meetup." Above all else, never send them any money. There is no woman ready to sleep with you if you just pay for a gift card, gas money, or food.
- Nearly all of these posts have some sort of odd grammatical error that a native North American English speaker would not make. For example:
I don't care if our hobby's match, Lets go ahead and have some fun! We can start online with sharing our private photos and may be some cam calls?
- "Hobby's" is misspelled
- "Lets" is missing the apostrophe
- "may be some cam calls" misspells "maybe" and no one says "cam calls" here.
Lastly, please use that report button when you see these. In response to this I added a new automod rule that will automatically remove a post when a certain threshold of reports is hit. I will manually review anything that is removed under this rule and re-approve if necessary but I'm hoping that this gives you all some power to tell these scammers to fuck off when I'm not around to do it.
Stay safe everyone!
