Hi everyone, I wanted to post a short meta thread to remind you all to please report scammers as it really does help keep this sub clean.
While the majority of scammers are blocked via automated checks and manual reviews, I am only one person who does not sit at my computer 24/7. Even then it's not always evident to spot a scammer until they actually try to scam you and I usually err on the side of caution to avoid a false positive ban of a real person. Ultimately it is your responsibility to assess if someone is real or not. Because of that another critical line of defense is user reports through either:
- Sending a modmail message.
- If you do send modmail claiming someone is a scammer please provide a screenshot as evidence. I won't ban someone purely due to a single user report without evidence.
- Using the report button.
- If you use the report button please make sure to report it as an "breaks r/r4rseattle rules" option.
- This is especially useful because the automod will automatically remove posts that receive a certain number of reports. This means reporting puts it in your power to get these posts removed.
These scammers are the scum of the earth and it's really helpful if you report them as such. I'd prefer to not have to implement further restrictions on posting if possible.
Above all else: Never send anyone money for any reason in order to meet up. This includes buying gift cards, paying for gas, paying for food, paying for hotel rooms, or literally any transaction. If you want to split costs for a meet up, fair enough, but do it in person. There's no reason to do it ahead of time.
