Do you ever lay awake at night, mesmerized by the unfathomable depth and complexity of our reality? To watch city-lights glimmer, knowing that every pinpoint of light is the hearth of a home? Our world seems to possess a dizzying level of detail, but yet -- it presents it to us with such effortless grace. Just think, how every street holds a story, and every alley has a secret to share. Our boulevards follow Napoleonic grid-lines. The thoroughfares trace the foundations of medieval walls. Even the words on this page bears memories, every phrase a kin to a Latin ancestor, scions of yet forgotten tongues. We are so, so lucky-- to exist within a reality of such boundless sensitivity.
But what if I told you, our reality was at risk? That our world is in danger?
Growing up, I always felt equal admiration for the Humanities and the Sciences. Both are valid paths for us to understand our reality -- whether within or without. A Physicist studying intricacies of the force and field will come to a better understanding of her place within the world, just as the Classicist studying the chronologies of Thucydides. After all, we all partake in une réalité humaine -- the plenum of Heidegger's Dasein. Our neurochemistry is the foundation for the possibility of experience, but is not experience itself.
Would you try to save our world? What would you give to ensure its safety?
Whether it was by chance or by inclination, as I began my studies I gravitated towards the humanities. I delved into the thoughts and sentiments of our ancestors -- the literature and heritage of our history. Shyly at first, then with greater confidence -- I learned to appreciate the poetry of Homer, the rhetoric of Aristotle. I read about power and justice from Plato, and wept at the final drama of Socrates death. Through my books and my reading, I found my education by the side of Lucretius, Augustine, Descartes, and Kant. Until all of a sudden, it seemed as if four-years passed by in a blur, and I found myself a graduate of the Academy.
What if you needed to sacrifice something to save the world?
It was a lovely education. A tasting-course of experiences, where each morsel could be sampled for a lifetime. And perhaps in another era, I would have been content, to study Philosophy forever.
But I realized it cannot be. Because we all have an ethical obligation towards the world that we live in. And we live in the most challenging and momentous of eras -- a fulcrum reaching to the very knife's edge of its pivot point. Through dangers within or without, our reality risks annihilation. Whether climate change, or nuclear warfare. Artificial intelligence, value-functions gone rogue. Or even just the unprincipled march of capitalism, that totem which leads to suffering unquantified and globalized strife. Our human-reality could easily be diminished, even if our civilization remains intact.
What if in order to save the world, you have to sacrifice your whole life?
In another era, I would have been content to write poetry. But in our accelerating century, I made a different choice.
I signed up for a Bachelor's in Computer Science. My bookshelves hold more than just Aristotle now. My Euclid shares his space with Cormen, Stroustrup, and Knuth. I've begun the journey of obtaining a PhD in Artificial Intelligence, as a way to protect the beautiful complexity of our human-reality. Because if AI does end up posing an existential threat to our reality, I want to be there to stop it. Or at least, be in the same room where the choices are made.
But I can't do this by myself.
This is where you come in. I'm looking for a partner to join me on this mission to save the world together. Whether you are a Scientist or Mathematician, or a Scholar of a different field, I look forward to your letter. As fellow lovers of our human-reality, let us work to ensure its safety.
Let us experience our reality, together.
