Tired of heavy boats. Making pack canoe right now, certainly double paddle, possibly work with a nice single paddle. Intend to do classic portage routes and areas [e.g., St. Regis, Saranac Lake, elsewhere]. Will be paddling through the winter in Potomac, Chesapeake tributaries, possibly bigger water in kayak / tandem canoe.
Fit. Experienced paddler. Experienced but out of practice backpack/camp/explore. [Field scientist remote experience US west deserts/high mountains, Egypt, etc.] Good field companion, cheery, competent, good navigator, level headed, not an asshole.
Me general: Military child, all over, mainly British origins, dry humor, quiet lots of the time, introverted unless I like you. Decent cook. Good at fixing things. Tolerant. Patient. 5-10 blue eyed white retired guy with grey beard (short) and minimal hair. I wear glasses. Formerly worked in geology, environmental consulting, law, and other things.
You: I usually get along better with women. But some guys are more than OK. Complementary folks work well. A surprise to me is that I enjoy someone often talkative, especially oversharing. Tend to attract ADHD and similar, which isn't an issue. Probably not a position for an untalented beginner, I hope to do some amusing treks that will take some guts. But good self-knowledge, learning ability, and humor does most of the job. People reasonably together physically with camping / outdoors skills can pick up canoe stuff fairly quickly, for flat waters.
If this is of interest, I'm near Old Town Alexandria. A walk talk does wonders for getting to know someone a little. I'm close to the Potomac, so a canoe ride would be a good follow up. Note that cute scruffy Jack Russellish terrier usually goes along.
