The sidebar says there are 52,930 (as of 3/11/14) subscribers. There are 7.149 billion people on Earth. That means this sub represents 0.0000074% of the world population. Which means it's very very unlikely that another person on /r/r4r (or any other social sub for that matter) will be within a reasonable distance of you. Even then, not everybody will be compatible.
Basically, /r/r4r is GREAT for making long-distance acquaintances, people that like to text, skype, email, whatever. But it is seriously not the best method for finding locals to hang out with. If that's really what you're looking for, YOU NEED TO FIND A YOUR LOCAL SOCIAL SUB AND BECOME REALLY ACTIVE THERE. Let's compare...
/r/SoCalR4R has 2,727 (as of 3/11/14) subscribers. The SoCal population is 22,680,010. So /r/SoCalR4R represents 0.0001202% which is 16.24 times greater than the worldwide representation.
So what you need to do, like RIGHT NOW, is find your local social sub and subscribe, make a post, and start sending messages to other posters. If you've searched and searched and you've determined that there is no local sub for you, CREATE ONE. You and those in the same boat as you would do well for it. This doesn't mean that you have to stop using /r/r4r. Not everybody will use their local sub and not everybody will be aware that one exists. And there's nothing wrong with cross-posting to /r/r4r if your local sub doesn't produce. There's also nothing wrong with promoting your local sub on /r/r4r or any other appropriate sub.
Check the sidebar of /r/r4r to see if your local sub is listed.
And remember, these communities only work when you use them. Lurking is no good. You have to act.
