Post Body

There're video essays out there about how the classic romantic comedy has come and gone, and I agree. But having been a teenager at just the wrong time, I grew a taste for those slightly more meta and anti-romantic comedy films, more comedy-drama, because they weren't always afraid to paint characters poorly. Films like 'The F Word' with Daniel Radcliffe make me think about how often I've been the person who meets someone at the wrong time and I'm wondering if I'll meet someone worthwhile to make the timing for. 'Ruby Sparks' was great for the writer in me but also a cautionary tale against being a controlling bastard. (500) Days of Summer because… Nobody wants to be Tom and nobody should romanticize him despite it being Joseph Gordon-Levitt and if you romanticize him heavily, you missed the point, BUT, the notion of finding magic in someone will always be stuck with me. 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower' taught me about chasing a feeling of being understood and now I'm here. I'm leaving work, wondering if I should watch 'Shortcomings' or wait around until the next person I meet who's down to watch it. The last time I met someone worth watching a movie with, it was a woman fighting with me in a restaurant over how 'The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind' has worse human beings than '(500)'.

I suppose I'm thinking about movies like this because I'm looking forward to my next story in life being like this. A story worth writing some mediocre to great screenplay over. Maybe I'm getting out of work at just the right time to get stuck in the elevator with someone who's had a miserable series of meetings today and we start singing something raucous. But, I think that writing on here will be enough today to hopefully start a conversation about ice cream or today's highs and lows, or about how my colleague gave me this Jinro soju dispenser for my upcoming birthday.  Either way, let's chat, yeah?

Hi, I'm 6'0", Southeast Asian, pan, flexible working day job exec, goldenrod is my favorite color (though, all shades of yellow are fair), am a Leo, very much an ambivert / ANFP, reader, writer, can't-ride-a-biker, can be boundlessly empathetic, and am often told I subvert pretense. Am looking for stories to trade, good conversation, but most importantly, people to whom I make feel mutually understood. I work in law, tech, insurance, and in SF, but live in the East Bay, and let's make each other's day!
