Single straight white male; no kids; never married. On the tall and lanky side. Glasses. Thinning hair. Introvert.
Ways in which I am a "frump":
Frump. noun. Definition 2 on merriam-webster.com: "A staid, drab, old-fashioned person."
A near synonym, in terms of connotations, might be "middle-aged." Even before I was actually, factually middle-aged, I acted in middle-aged ways….
Here are some examples of my frumpiness:
1
—I'm a walker. I don't own a car. And if I can't hoof it, I will look into the public transit options. So far, I have yet to set foot in a rideshare vehicle in my life…. (Again, not proud of this….)
2
—I put off owning a smartphone for forever, until my aging parents demanded I have one and demanded I carry it with me. I have nostalgia for the days when I wasn't always reachable and "on call."
3
—I'm a bigtime patron of the public library. I currently have 90 items checked out to me. (The limit has been set at 100.) Again, not something I'm proud of. This probably betrays a level of compulsiveness…. I even check out DVDs. In fact, the majority of the movies, etc., I watch are in the form of physical media (DVDs) I've borrowed from the library, as opposed to something I'm accessing via streaming.
4
—I wear large sunhats. And in case I need extra shade, I carry an umbrella everywhere I go to potentially use as a parasol.
5
—I love pigeons. I don't feed them but I like chilling with them. Watching them gives me great pleasure.
A common misconception about me:
A common misconceptiona about me is that I'm unusually "smart." I bring this up because it seems like sometimes people can be intimidated by me in this resepct, and I think it's a misleading characterization. To me, "smart" connotes quickness and scope: you pick things up easily, know a lot about a lot, you hang on to what you know (you have the storage capacity to retain it) and son. While I'm capable of learning things, I don't learn at a lightning-fast pace or absorb new things easily. I do not have great scope or breadth by any means. And there are things I have little knack for at all, such as learning new languages. I am neither polymath nor polyglot.
My strengths intellectually lie in being a patient thinker: I'm someone who enjoys turning ideas around in my head; I entertain them; I play with them. I try to look at things from multiple angles and perspectives, with humility and patient care; which I think is significantly different from what "smart" usually connotes.
Who you are:
It can (sometimes) seems bothersomely shallow to me when people are very definite and specific about who they are looking for. I really have no idea who you are. Surprise me….
That being said, I can say that I'm interested in friendship first and foremost, and if the account you message me from is plastered all over with sex-related stuff, that's probably not going to make the best possible first impression. Also, I much prefer Reddit Chats to Reddit Messages, because I find Reddit Messages are impossible to delete, and there's something psychologically onerous about that to me; I like knowing I can potentially delete things.
If you are looking for further adjectival descriptors, I might offer the following: honest, kind, and patient.
Always barring unique circumstances and unforeseen conditions, I also hope you'll be at least potentially open to meeting in person, or at least video-chatting at some point if we live far apart. If we seem to connect relatively well, let's try to get out of the Matrix insofar as it's possible to do so ;)
