Does your machine run slower with the foot pedal?

My machine has the option of running without the pedal and it just zips along. When I plug the pedal back in, it instantly slows down a LOT. I can’t figure out how to open the pedal to look inside but I don’t want to buy a new one if it doesn’t need it. Can anyone give me some insight?
