Thread breaking when chain piecing

Post Body

I’ve started piecing my first quilt top and for some reason my machine does not like me chain piecing. I can get a few pairs of fabric pieces through, then the top thread breaks at the end of one of the pairs, in the one or two stitches that it doesn’t have fabric to go through. I have read on here that the first thing you should do when thread starts breaking is to change the needle. Of course, I seem to be out of new ones and have some coming in on Tuesday.

I had my machine serviced several months ago and have only used it to alter two garments between then and starting the quilt top this evening, so I’m not sure where to start in trying to figure out what is causing the thread to break.

I am posting this right before bed and I unfortunately won’t be able to reply until probably mid- to late morning, but I would really appreciate the insight from those of you who have much more experience than I do. Thank you!
