I’ve been pondering a quilted jacket in the last few months, and having barely sewn and never quilted it seems like the next logical project.
My current plan is to buy my outer fabric as just regular quilting fabric because there’s so many more pattern and colour options. I’d then like to use a flannel backing/lining fabric to add warmth and coziness. I would wash and dry my fabric before cutting or quilting it, although probably not the quilt tops themselves so they don’t get ruined. I’d also wash and dry my quilt pieces before I cut out jacket pattern pieces.
Pattern wise I want to EPP hexagons into panels big enough for my pattern pieces and then hand quilt the batting and backing together with the panels. Hand sewing and EPP are for the look and also because I don’t yet have a machine (and because I just found out about EPP and need to try it). Jacket pattern TBD but I really love the look of the Tamarack Jacket by Grainline Studio, especially with the collar and patch pocket mods.
This feels like a bigger project than my skill level but I’ve always been a jump in with both feet kind of gal when it comes to crafting. I have an EPP starter kit on the way and I’m going to do some practicing to see how I take to it. I’m itching to buy project fabric but I’m trying not to be impulsive without at least gathering information first.
TLDR: Can I make a quilt top with quilting cotton and back it with flannel? Would that be an ok move for a wearable item?
