What is the point of being in a relationship?

I get having someone to do something with and trying to have someone make you grow as a person but isn't that what having friends are for? Then there is the sexual aspect but you could just hookup with someone. I dont get this and its driving me insane because there is such a strong social status and self worth associated with being with someone. It just feels like glorified friendship.
