I (25f) have a nonbinary friend who recently came out as preferring he/him pronouns. They are genetically female and continuously capitalize off of their feminine. (the second part of that sentence is really what i’m confused about, i rly don’t care about biological gender here.) They wear skirts and tight fitting clothing to enhance/show off their body (specifically boobs and booty), they cut their hair but still wear long female wigs. They recently got into stripping, have been a sex worker for many years and still model in a very feminine extenuating way. AITA for not feeling comfortable calling them, him? It just feels very performative given that they still seem so comfortable capitalizing off of their femininity and i’m very confused. I don’t want to ask them about it because I don’t want to make them feel criticized or further invalidated when i know there is something i’m not understanding. Do ya’ll think the feminine side they’re still exploiting is simply because of their chosen line of work and i need to back tf off and respect who they choose to be outside of the workplace/on instagram? I do feel that way, but there’s also something that holds me back from feeling fully respectful as they post to show off their femininity often. If any of you could give me some clarity i’d greatly appreciate it…i’d hate to hurt my friend bcuz of something i can’t understand yet…but also…why do they want to be called he/him if they still live their life fully willingly presenting as she/they? h e l p.
