Is possible to bring the horde mode to the sourceports?

GoG customer here. After a year and a bit finally the game dropped in our accounts and I've been testing (to many joy) the horde mode.
Still, I've been playing Quake for quite a long time with quakespasm spiked, and it feels a drag to having two installations for "the same game."
I know that the MachineGames expansions are compatible with a few fixes, but this being a separate gamemode and all that maybe there's a bit more to make it work.
Any ideas?
