Let me be blunt, I am a Quake II boy when it comes to Quake games, in fact my top 3 is:
1: Quake II 2: Quake Live 3: Quake
Iām happy to explain, if asked TO explain, but thatās not what this post is about.
Rather I want to share my opinion on Quake and Quake II Source Ports.
To be made clear, I understand that the developers of these Source Ports they donāt all collab at all or if they do itās rare and each source port adresses a large bevy of things, some source ports fix quirks, improve netcode, etc, but what aggrivates me is there is so many source ports, that I find myself honestly downloading all of them because I donāt know which one is the definitive best source port.
And the fans donāt make deciding on a best source port easy either one might say āVK Quake is better because it supports Vulkan which is better than OpenGLā another might say āNah Mark V is better because it has HD Texturesā, and Iām just like āGuys, this is not making it easy, your forcing me to analyse every source port down to their features and fixes which requires me to research what each feature does and in the end it just causes my brain to melt into a pile of mush.
And it makes me just wish that these source port devs would come together to make a definitive source port that truly is, in every sense of the word the best source port, the best for singleplayer, the best for multiplayer, the best for gigantic, Minecraft sized maps, the best for Maps with brushes so small they are used for detailing that one rock, to Using a wide array of rendering engines and you get where Iām going.
At present my top 3 Gotoās are:
- QuakeSpasm Spiked
- VK Quake
- Yamagi Quake
But what I want is a Source port for Quake and Quake II that CAN easily and is easily considered THE #1 Source Port.
