My RAID0 4TB setup is getting old (disks approaching 5 years), and starting to fill up, so I need more space.
I'm looking to buy two 8 TB disks to replace them, but I'm torn because I see a lot of reports of failures for both the Ironwolf and the WD Red Plus disks. Also, in the past I've read about the WD disks clicking every 5 seconds, and I'm concerned about the noise level with the Ironwolf disks as well. The current ones are quite, but they're 5900 RPM. The 8 TB ones run at 7200 RPM.
Noise and longevity are the biggest concerns. My desk sits about 3 feet from the NAS and my couch is about 6-7 feet from it, so if they're really loud that would get annoying. I live in the rurals and our noise floor is really low here, so even moderately loud disks humming will be noticeable.
Can anyone recommend one of these over the other? And do the WD disks still click? I'm leaning toward the slower WD ones if that's not an issue, since I'd expect them to be quieter and I don't need the fast performance, my NAS is largely archival and for video streaming locally with Plex, neither of which need particularly fast performance (and if I need faster performance, my NAS has two NVME slots for that).
