I want the game to continue ticking only when i want to

I am trying to make a simple AI and for this i need my game to move only when the AI is decided which direction to go. So basically;

while running: 
    if AI_decided:
        tick()
    else:
        wait()

How can i achive this?Maybe something with clock idk.Thanks in advance
