The author parameter has been re-enabled for the API after a lot of discussion with a few people. Author search for redditsearch.io will remain disabled for the time being.
I am implementing some logic that will flag abuses of the author parameter via the API but it will take time to get right.
I can't advertise what flags I'm putting in place to catch abuses of the API (because people would circumvent them) but my hope is that it will help to curb abuse of the author search feature.
There will be some added limitations for author search that will restrict how often it can be called and how many different authors can be searched but the ultimate goal is to not penalize the majority of users who use the API for good vs. the small minority that use it for evil.
This has been a very tough thing to balance but I do believe the changes I'm putting in place will help curb abuse going forward.
Edit: I also hope that the Reddit admins can review their suspension policy to make sure that people aren't getting liberally suspended for innocuous comments made years ago that were taken out of context.
This will be an ongoing issue I will actively tackle so please bear with me as I work to address abuses of the API. I don't always make the right decision and sometimes there just isn't a clear-cut right or wrong decision. I have to weigh a lot of things when making these type of decisions and sometimes it is extremely difficult to make a balanced decision that ultimately helps the community instead of hurting it.
Thanks.
