Optimizing system for PD

Been plugging away with PD over the last couple weeks, one problem persists though. I can’t create a large patch without Puredata getting incredibly slow and unusable. I’ve tried switching to Asio, and also tried all the sound settings that worked properly but nothing helps. Is there any tricks or tips I’m missing out on? I’ve read around the internet and didn’t find anything that helped.
