If Rhaegar really loved lyanna, why abduct her?

And why not let her go to Ned and explain that she indeed loved Rhaegar during the entire war? Did he think that everybody would forget about her after Rickard and Brandon's deaths? Was it because Lyanna was pregnant and he was afraid of the child's safety?Â
Really hope GRRM gives us a backstory on Rhaegar in the future; this is one of the things about the series I really want to know.
