I was just re-reading the chapter of ADWD where Griff sends out Haldon and Tyrion into the city streets of Selhorys to confirm the rumours they've heard about Volantis marching against Daenerys, and found myself wondering why Tyrion did not make more effort to assume a disguise in public. This is the extent of his disguise:
"Haldon donned a hooded cloak, and Tyrion shed his home-made motley for something drab and grey."
He even remarks on how people react to seeing him:
"Tyrion felt their eyes upon them as he waddled by, and heard them whispering to one another and giggling behind their hands. You would think they had never seen a dwarf before."
So we know that during ADWD, Cersei has put out a bounty on Tyrion's head, making it generally difficult for any dwarf man to stay alive and safe, even on Essos (Penny's brother Oppo was killed for Tyrion's bounty while in Volantis, although Tyrion has yet to learn of that). Tyrion is a smart enough man to realize that it is dangerous for him to be seen in public, and potentially recognized - he is also smart enough to know that his sister likely put out a rough description of his appearance along with the price on his head.
And we also know that by the end of this chapter he does get recognized and he does get carried off at swordpoint, by ser Jorah Mormont. Perhaps if he had been in at least some partial disguise, it would have been enough for Jorah to not immediately recognize him.
At the same time, a disguise would have to hide/mask/distract from one, several or all of his multiple VERY distinct features:
- his dwarfism/short stature
- his mismatched eyes
- his LACK OF NOSE
- his facial scarring
It is possible that Tyrion simply did not care whether he was recognized; that he underestimated the threat of being seized/killed; or that he realized how difficult it would be to disguise these features and so simply did not attempt it. But if we were hypothetically coming up with a way that Tyrion could have gone "incognito", what are some ways in which he could achieve it, technically? (I'm ruling out using glammers, or changing face like Jhaqen.)
The only thing I can come up with would be to dress up as a woman (dwarf), but the problem with the nose would remain.... I'm curious what you guys might come up with to disguise such a hard-to-disguise man.
