So I messaged the other night having a breakdown about my dogs Arousal biting. I just wanted to update folk on what we have resorted to since, whilst we wait to renegade with our trainer.
We have started to do more but shorter walks throughout the day, rather than long walks. It seems to work well with satisfying her needs. Indoors now we are keeping her short lead on at all times. If she starts to pick up the body language of about to go crazy, we go into an impulse control training to get her brain into “teach” mode. This seems to be working well. If it escalates and she does a bite (she hasn’t) then we do timeouts. It was to tough for us to leave the room as she would just chase your ankles so instead I lead her out the room and into the hall for 30 seconds. I then lead her back into the room, get her to sit and give her a treat. If she comes back in and is still crazy then we will keep doing the same again but add 30 seconds until she can come back in calm.
Outdoors, we have been doing similar. When we see the body language, putting her into the impulse control training and encouraging her to settle.
We have also started the Karen Overall Relaxtion protocol every day.
So far it’s worked great but I appreciate it’s only been a few days. I just wanted to be proactive whilst we wait! Plus I needed to do something to make me feel better haha. Happy to hear any feedback on what we are doing.
